What is Resilience?
The capacity to recover quickly
from difficulties; toughness.
The human species faces real threats from declining energy supplies, climate change and economic instability on a planet with a growing population and finite resources. Building community resilience is the best response to the 21st Century challenges we face because they can't be solved with technical fixes.
Even in an unpredictable future, we can adapt and create resilient communities by reimagining work, reskilling ourselves, promoting entrepreneurship and weaving webs of connection and support. We must recognize our vulnerabilities and develop viable strategies to create communities that can flourish. Resilience means building local food systems, developing community energy systems and investing in local economies.
Doane University and the IHPH are working to create a resilient university and community through education and action. We hope you feel inspired to take part.
